Fine Gael's Ivan Keatley has been elected Mayor of Kildare following a meeting yesterday.

The decision was passed at the Kildare County Council's Annual General Meeting, and Keatley takes over the role from former Mayor Cllr Brendan Weld.

Keatley is a native of the Kilcullen area, and plays football for St Laurence's. He is a prominent member of the Athy Municipal District Committee, along with various other organisations in the area.

"Congratulations to Cllr Ivan Keatley on his election to Mayor of Kildare, to succeed Cllr Brendan Weld who was a very dignified and exemplary first citizen over the last 12 months. Best wishes to our new Mayor," said TD Fiona O'Loughlin on her facebook page.

TD Martin Heydon also expressed his delight at his party colleagues appointment, stating; "Congratulations to my friend & colleague Ivan Keatley, who had the honour today of becoming Mayor of Kildare. The county is in safe hands!

Cllr Joe Neville described Kildare as being in a 'safe pair of hands' under Keatley through his facebook page. "Congratulations to the new Mayor of Kildare Cllr. Ivan Keatley. A very able & articulate Councillor I know Kildare will be well represented in the year ahead," he said.

Fine Gael representative for the Naas area, Billy Hillis, was elected to the position of Deputy Mayor.
