Council selling off derelict Portlaoise house subject to a number of stipulations
Laois County Council has sought expressions of interest from buyers who want to live in the house
A house in Portlaoise which has been derelict and burned on a number of occasions is expected to get a new owner next month.
Laois County Council has invited expressions of interest from eligible applicants who are interested in buying 53 O’Moore Place, Portlaoise as a home.
Local Councillor Caroline Dwane Stanley is delighted that the house will be put back into use. She said it has been derelict and subject to antisocial behaviour for a number of years and she would like to see a local family use it.
“That has been derelict now for I would say at least 15 years,” she explained. “It has been set on fire on a couple of occasions,” she said.
“It will be great to see a family getting the use of it,” Cllr Dwane Stanley remarked. She said the Council purchased the property a number of years ago but weren’t in a position to bring it back into use.
While she is delighted to see the house being taken out of dereliction, Cllr Dwane Stanley was adamant that the house be sold to someone who needed it and not to a developer or individual seeking to make a profit.
“This is about ending dereliction and providing a home for a family,” she said.
In its notice, Laois County Council stated that the property must be bought be someone intending to use it as their home.
“Applications are invited only from natural persons, whether applying singly or jointly. Applications from companies, corporate bodies, trusts, funds, nominees, agents acting on behalf of third parties, or investment vehicles will not be accepted,” they stated.
“The successful purchaser will be required to occupy the dwelling as their principal private residence,” the Council said.
Expressions of interest can be submitted to: Director of Services, Housing via the following email address [email protected] Director of Services, Housing, Aras an Chontae, JFL Avenue, Portlaoise, Co. Laois by post. The closing date for expressions of interest is Wednesday, August 19, 2026 at 5pm.
The sale of the property is expected to come before a meeting of Laois County Council next month.
