Fine for being drunk in Portlaoise

A fine was issued to a man who was drunk and had to be arrested for his own safety in Portlaoise.

Mouloud Lebsari, 43, of Room 8, Montague Hotel, Laois was arrested at 2.10am at Top Square, Portlaoise on May 27 last.

Sergeant JJ Kirby said the defendant was drunk and had to be arrested for his own safety. He said the man had two previous convictions.

Solicitor Josephine Fitzpatrick said her client was pleading at the earliest opportunity.

“There had been a bereavement and he drank to excess,” she said.

Judge Andrew Cody wanted to know where he was getting money from to be “paralytic” at that hour of the morning.

Ms Fitzpatrick said it had been a family occasion.

Judge Cody fined the man €200 and gave him three months to pay.

“I am sorry,” the defendant said.
