The laneway leading to a historic Laois church is set to be taken in charge by the council.

Ballyroan village's Georgian Church of Ireland chapel dates back to the 1800s but the lane towards it which includes some houses was never a public way.

Now Laois County Council is to set in motion the taking in charge of it, so they can take in responsibility for its maintenance.

Cllr Barry Walsh had tabled a motion to the June meeting of Portlaoise Municipal District requesting the action for the 80 metre long lane.

"I was approached by the lane users and residents. It is used regularly. I am delighted with the response," he said.

The Portlaoise MD office has undertaken to examine the lane with a view to advertising the road department's intention to declare it a public road.
