Laois County Council is planning to hold a Mattress Amnesty in Portarlington later this month.

Senior Engineer at Laois County Council Adrian Barrett said the last Mattress Amnesty in Portlaoise enjoyed an excellent turnout.

“There will be a follow up amnesty in Portarlington towards the end of the month and again we would be hoping for a similar positive turnout,” he said.

“The turnout was very positive and it is positive that we are getting them collected in an appropriate manner,” he said.

Independent Cllr Ben Brennan asked that a Mattress Amnesty return to Pedigree Corner. He said there was one before but they didn’t get one this time.

“Once a year even, it might stop a lot of the dumping,” said Cllr Brennan.

Mr Barrett told him there was no plan to hold one in Pedigree Corner.

“We don’t seem to exist at all,” replied Cllr Brennan.

In response to a query from Sinn Fein Cllr Caroline Dwane Stanley, Mr Barrett said they would look at a scheme or amnesty for old paint.

The issue was discussed at the latest meeting of Laois County Council.
