Celebrations commence in Mountmellick this week to mark the tenth birthday of the town's boutique cinema.

The Balcony Cinema in Mountmellick Arts Centre opened ten years ago this month and the committee behind the popular venue is pleased to announce that they will celebrate the anniversary with the screening of five movies, culminating in a free screening of the very first movie shown on opening night in 2013.

Prior to reopening in 2013 it was 21 years since the CYMS cinema showed its final film, Titanic. The cinema succumbed to increased competition, difficulty in getting new releases and outdated equipment with no funds to upgrade.

In 2013, Michael Feely and Ger Lynch with permission from the Arts Centre Committee, set up the ‘Balcony Cinema’.

This involved putting in a big screen, sound, projection and amplifying equipment as well as a protective curtain.

The celebrations screenings throughout the next two weeks are as follows:

  • Wednesday October 25: My sailor, my love.
  • Thursday, October 26: Room.
  • Friday, October 27: The Little Mermaid.
  • Wednesday, November 1: Noble.
  • Thursday, November 2: The Quiet Man (admission free).

Please text on 089 4247448 to book a seat for that night.

Tickets for the other shows are as normal €5pp, with refreshments served. The staff are looking forward to celebrating this great event with all of their patrons.
