A shortcut roadway used by residents of Portlaoise town centre is in bad repair and causing "little falls" according to a councillor.

The Car Road is between the long established estate St John's Square and Mill View, beside the Ridge Cemetery.

It is often used as a walkway for residents to get to the town, says Cllr Catherine Fitzgerald.

She tabled a motion to the April meeting of Portlaoise Muncipal District asking for repairs, and also a pedestrian crossing where the road exits, opposite the Memorial Park.

"I heard that people are getting little falls. It is used as a shortcut to get to Mill View. People from Dr Murphy Place, St John's Square and St Brigid's Place use it to get to town quicker. Just to make it easier and safer. Mill Road is very busy," she said.

Cllr Thomasina Connell seconded her motion.

"I fully support this, it is adjacent to the area where I love, and cars do travel very fast. I would welcome safety measures," she said.

Cllr Caroline Dwane Stanley agrees and wants another area repaired too.

"Regarding Mill View, there is a section of path at people's homes that has deteriorated. Will there be work done over the summer? It might be an opportunity to address the pedestrian crossing," she suggests.

In answer to the motion, Laois County Council state that repairs will be carried out on Car Road shortly. A site meeting will be arranged to consider the request for a pedestrian crossing.
