The defendant had 36 previous convictions for no insurance

A man with 209 previous convictions was found driving despite being disqualified for 25 years.

Sean Coss (32) of  Pallas, Portlaoise admitted driving at Kirwan Park, Mountmellick on March 28 this year.

Garda Cathal Burke said the defendant was driving an 07LH registered Ford Focus when stopped on the day. He said the man had 209 previous convictions, 142 of which were road traffic related including 36 for no insurance. He said the man was disqualified from driving for 25 years in 2018.

Judge Andrew Cody told defence counsel that it would “put you to the pin of your collar to say anything about this.”

Counsel for the accused said his client had fixed his sister’s car and “took it for a test drive” on the date in question. He said the man had obtained a job and was working permanently.

Judge Cody banned the man from driving for 40 years and fined him €2,000.  He fixed recognisance at €2,500 in cash in case of appeal.

The defendant lodged an appeal before the sitting of Portlaoise District Court had concluded.
