Abbeyleix community nursing unit has no pedestrian crossing, but one has been requested via Portlaoise Municipal District

The HSE’s community nursing unit in Abbeyleix, locally known as Abbeyleix hospital, could be in line for a pedestrian crossing.

Cllr Barry Walsh has tabled a motion to the October meeting of Portlaoise Municipal District, with the request for a crossing on the Ballinakill road, near the hospital.

“It is quite a busy road. This has been raised to me by a number of people. Vulnerable road users find it hard to get across the road to the Garda station or the shop because traffic is coming so fast, and people with mobility issues as well.

“It’s an important area to get access for people. You have Rathmoyle road there, loads of other services that would be more accessible too.

“It has to happen, it needs to happen, hopefully it will get a good response,” he added.

His motion was seconded by Cllr John Joe Fennelly.

“I agree, we’ve all been contacted about this. We have the hospital there, the daycare centre, the health centre and there is a busy garage near it. There is a need for it,” he said.

In response, Laois County Council’s road design staff have agreed to examine the request, in conjunction with the district’s officials.
