The probation act was applied to a man who admitted being drunk and disorderly outside a pub in Portlaoise.

Michael McInerney, 53, of 10 Woodstock Lodge, Woodstock Street, Athy, Co Kildare was arrested on the Mountmellick Road in Portlaoise on September 30 last.

Sgt JJ Kirby said the defendant was shouting obscenities in the Bog Road car park at 12.15am on the night in question. He said the man, who has one previous conviction, was very drunk.

Solicitor Barry Fitzgerald said his client had attended the afters of a wedding at a local establishment.

“He had far too much to drink and made a complete nuisance of himself,” he said.

Mr Fitzgerald said his client had brought €100 to court.

Judge Andrew Cody said he would apply the probation act if the defendant paid €100 to the court poor box, which the man then did.
