Signage needed following “narrow escapes” on Laois road

A new sign is to be erected after “a few narrow escapes” on stretch of road where dangerous overtaking occurs in Laois.
Fine Gael Cllr PJ Kelly asked for the signage due to his concerns about safety on the old Dublin Road in Ballybrittas.
He tabled a motion asking “that Laois County Council install a sign including ‘concealed entrance’ on the old Dublin Road opposite the Christmas Tree Depot in Ballybrittas as vehicles are still dangerously overtaking on the white line at this location.”
In response, Senior Executive Engineer Philip McVeigh said “Laois County Council will arrange for a new sign to be installed at this location on the R445 Old Dublin Road.”
Cllr McEvoy said people continue to overtake at the location and it is putting local residents in fear. “They have had a few narrow escapes,” he said.
“Hopefully this sign will show the motorists that there is a dangerous spot,” he said.
The motion was seconded by Fianna Fail Cllr Paschal McEvoy at the latest monthly meeting of Portarlington Graiguecullen Municipal District.
