Work promised on dangerous bends to Laois cemetery

Roadworks are promised in Laois to make visitors to a cemetery safer on their walk.
St Patrick's Cemetery near Ballyroan is on a road with no footpath, but a local landowner is agreeing to have hedges cut back, to improve visibility.
Cllr John Joe Fennelly has urged Laois County Council to get the work done soon.
He tabled a motion to the October meeting of Portlaoise Municipal District, asking the council for a timescale on the works, which he said will improved visibility and safety for residents.
"I thank the landowner who has given permission to take out a hedge. This is to make it safer on the Abbeyleix side of the cemetery. Coming out there is a bend and it's hard to see traffic. People walk to the cemetery and the path ends. Will you look at it?" he asked.
Cllr Barry Walsh described it as "a dangerous area", seconding the motion and welcoming the works.
Area engineer Wes Wilkinson agreed to look at the hedge.
In his official reply to the motion Mr Wilkinson said that it intended to start the works within the next fortnight. they are to be funded under the Low Cost Safety Improvement Scheme, on the R425 near Abbeyleix Cemetery.
He said the works will take two to three weeks to complete, subject to weather conditions.
