Work is beginning this June to turn a vandalised site into what will be the second Laois estate of modular social houses.

54 rapid build modular homes for Laois people on the housing waiting list, are going into the former Hepburn Court estate in Portlaoise, and the field next door.

The Hepburn Court estate, built during the Celtic Tiger, was burnt out and blocked up some years ago. The field next to it remains a target for anti-social behaviour including widespread dumping.

Now to be called Radharc Darach (Oak View) it will offer eight bungalows with two bedrooms and 46 two storey houses with two bedrooms each.placeholder image

Laois County Council bought up the Hepburn Court estate and already owned the field, and they are working with Clúid Housing who will install the modular houses.

The council gave an update on progress at the May council meeting.

"Site transfer in progress. Construction to commence in Q2 2023 (June). Local residents will be informed by Cluid in relation to phasing of the build and any potential effect of this," they said.
