The May monthly meeting of Longford County Council heard an update on the upcoming National Famine Commemoration.

The event takes place in Edgeworthstown this coming Sunday, May 19.

The update to councillors was given by Martina Needham, Head of Longford Library Services.

“Preparations for the event are going well. The community in Edgeworthstown is actively preparing for the event,” she told the members.

“The tennis courts have been cleaned and the Tidy Towns have cut grass and worked on the roundabouts,” she explained.

Ms Needham went on to outline some of the events that will take place as part of the Commemoration.

“Some of the talks will include a talk by Mairead Flynn, an award winning farmer. There will also be talks on Maria Edgeworth and Blind Fiddler Kiernan. There will be a guided walk around the famine cemetery by Martin Morris, County Archivist,” she stated.

“On the day, there will be six car parks available,” Ms Needham added.

Cllr Paul Ross told the meeting that “everyone in Edgeworthstown has really bought into this event. The town has never looked better.”
