There was good news recently for the graveyard committee of Saint’s Island, Newtowncashel.

The committee has received a grant of €30,000 for the restoration of monastic buildings in the historic site.

Secretary of the graveyard committee and Fine Gael local election candidate, Martin Skelly welcomed the news.

“Saint’s Island is one of the most historic places in county Longford. It is a place of huge historical value,” he explained.

The progressive committee has been undertaking other work. “We sunk a well in the middle of the Shannon and pumped water in,” Mr Skelly explained.

This grant allocation will further enhance the cemetery.
