The Government has not provided a single cent in financial assistance to Longford County Council for large scale fiscal losses sustained as a result of Covid-19, it has emerged.

Despite Leinster House bosses stumping up €1.2m to cover the cost of commercial rates losses brought about by the closure of Lough Ree power station, no financial aid has been set aside to cover coronavirus induced losses.

“The Covid-19 pandemic and the emeregency measures taken to mitigate it have had a significant impact on the finances of all local authorities, including Longford Council Council into 2022,” Longford local authority CE Paddy Mahon said.

“To date, no subvention has been received from central government for any losses incurred by local authorities and at this time, it is not expected that any will be received.”
