Marett Smith eliminated as FF face uphill battle in Granard

A further blow to Fianna Fail in the Granard LEA
In a further blow to Fianna Fail in the Granard LEA, Marett Smith was eliminated from the race.
Ms Smith, the former principal of the Sacred Heart NS in Granard, turned in a disappointing display. She was eliminated following the fourth count, with 336 votes.
Ms Smith was running in the Granard/Abbeylara part of the district. PJ Reilly had held a seat in this part of the district, but retired this time.
Smith’s elimination may benefit the other Granard based candidate left, Padraig McNamara (FG).
He stands at 881, which is still 300 short of the quota of 1,185.
David Cassidy is likely to be chasing McNamara for that final seat, but the Ballinamuck man stands at 661 and faces an uphill battle.
The next in line to be elected in Granard is sitting councillor Colin Dalton, who stands at 953.
The other candidate left in the field is Susan Murphy (FF), who stands at 552.
