The approved proposal plans to provide tourist accommodation in Abbeyshrule.

A proposal to provide tourist accommodation in Abbeyshrule has been granted planning permission by Longford County Council.

Neville and Anne Mills lodged an application last August for a change of use from agricultural buildings to tourist accommodation at Clonbrinn, Abbeyshrule, Longford.

The development will include three tourist accommodation units. The development will consist of two two-bedroom units and one three three bedrooms units. The units will have living, kitchen, dining and toilet areas.

Permission was also granted for an extension to one of the units for an expanded living area, bin storage, parking and water and wastewater treatment.

Located on the L5193 the site has access to the Royal Canal by Quinn’s bridge.

It is part of a working farmyard complex and is not located within any designated village envelope as specified in Longford County Development Plan. The proposed site is not within any Natural Heritage Area, SAC, SPA or Broad Zones.

In the planners report it states “...in order to support and grow the tourism offer new and additional accommodation facilities will be required.

The subject site is located in close proximity to the Royal Canal and the Abbeyshrule Aerodrome, two tourism related facilities”.

The planning permission approval is subject to 14 conditions. Those conditions include that in the event that the tourism site becomes unused and the units redundant then the structures shall be permanently removed, drainage, roads, water and wastewater considerations.

The approval also requires the developer to pay €2,508.60 in development contributions to the local authority.
