Home-seekers are being urged to take on a vacant or derelict dwelling with grants of up to €50,000 being available in a bid to tackle dereliction.

Details surrounding the Government's Vacant Property Refurbishment Grant (Croí Cónaithe) grant were unveiled at last week's meeting of Longford County Council.

The council's newly appointed and dedicated Vacant Homes Officer Mariana Alex Andrino provided details of the new €150m nationwide fund.

To qualify for the scheme, successful applicants must show proof that the dwelling in question is vacant for two years or more and built before 1993.

The finer points of the blueprint were broadly welcomed by local politicians.

“Longford has been strangled over the last ten years with vacant sites in our town,” said Fianna Fáil Cllr Martin Monaghan.

Fine Gael Cllr Paraic Brady followed suit, paying tribute to Director of Services John Brannigan and the council's wider housing department by remarking on how that same section has “upped its game” in recent times.
