THE Cathaoirleach of Offaly County Council, Councillor Declan Harvey has called on the council to investigate whether a natural gas pipeline which runs through a Tullamore street could be connected to more houses.

Cllr Harvey said there are two houses on Park Avenue already connected.

"The way things are going with green energy, there is a gas line in some parts of that street, whether it feeds every house or passes through, I don't know. Is that a thing that the council could look into?'' he asked at the monthly meeting of Tullamore Municipal District.

"There are some older people living on the street and they want to get away from solid fuel, turf and briquettes. Could that be connected to the houses? I don't know if a gas line or gas central heating are included in the grants for houses," he added.

In response senior executive engineer with Offaly County Council John Connelly said he didn't know but "we will certainly investigate where the lines are," he said.
