A Brazilian man who drove with no insurance or NCT was disqualified and fined at Tullamore district court.

Walter de Silva Fernandes (61) of The Sycamores, Edenderry, was stopped by Garda Finbarr Leahy on May 7, 2024 on the R402 at Killonean, Daingean, Offaly. Garda Leahy made a lawful demand for Mr Fernandes' insurance. He was unable to produce the document and opted to bring it to Edenderry Garda Station but failed to do so. His NCT was out of date by 12 months. His car was seized on that day. He no longer has a car, Garda Leahy told the court.

Mr Fernandes, who is living in Ireland for two years, is working in O'Brien Foods. He had no previous convictions.

Judge Andrew Cody said he had members of the Brazilian Community appearing at Portlaoise and Tullamore Court every week for no insurance, licences and NCT. ''I don't think the message is getting through,'' he said.

For driving with no insurance he fined Mr Fernandes €700 and disqualified him from driving for two years. For having no NCT he fined him €200.
