FINES totaling €1,000 were imposed on a learner driver at Tullamore District Court.

Zanas Naimavicius, The Sycamores, Edenderry, told Judge Andrew Cody he was driving unaccompanied by a qualified driver and without 'L' plates at Granary Court Road, Edenderry on August 6 last year because he “had to go to the shop”.

When Judge Cody noticed that Mr Naimavicius was laughing after his case was called, he asked the defendant: “What's funny?” and noted he had been “in stitches” earlier when other people had come before the court.

Mr Naimavicius said it was his first time to be in court. He worked on construction and had no previous convictions.

After he pleaded guilty Judge Cody imposed a fine of €500 on each of the two summonses.
