The new road linking O'Connor Square to Church St in Tullamore will be completed in 2025, it has been revealed.

Jean Ryan, Senior Executive Officer with Offaly County Council, informed members of Tullamore Municipal District of the timescale at last Thursday's monthly meeting.

She said it was hoped the roadway linking the Tanyard to High St will be completed next year.

Cllr Sean O'Brien said both developments will “make a huge difference” to Tullamore.

“The link road to O'Connor Square will greatly enhance Church St,” predicted the independent councllor.

Fine Gael member Cllr Neil Feighery said it was great to see the contract signed before the meeting appointing Tobin Consulting Engineers as consulting engineers for the project.

The project will link O’Connor Square and Market Square over the Tullamore river, provide open space which will act as a pivotal connection between the two key squares.

It will also build on the existing remote working facilities in Tullamore with innovation space in the town centre and contribute greatly to placemaking.

Site clearance will take place this week as the Tobin team commence surveys, design and plans for Part 8 planning and public consultation.

“We are excited to be part of this key project in the broader Tullamore Urban Regeneration and our Design Team is keen to bring our experience and expertise to work with Tullamore Municipal District to deliver an attractive and sustainable solution,” commented Brian Gallagher, Project Director, Tobin

“It is great to see this project commencing. The link from O’Connor Square to Church St will be beneficial for Tullamore town centre and will incorporate the historic ‘Hidden Bridge’ behind the Library into this project,” added Cllr Declan Harvey, Cathaoirleach of Tullamore Municipal District.

Cllr Neil Feighery said he was very impressed with the capacity of the council to draw down funding for major streetscape works.

The development and progress on the new link road between High St and the Tanyard were also welcomed by Cllr Tony McCormack.
