A delegation from Pearse Park residents in Tullamore, held a ''constructive meeting'' with Offaly County Council Management on Monday last in relation to the proposals for the Urban Greenway along the Canal close to Pearse Park.

Residents were alarmed when they heard that the construction of the Greenway would necessitate the removal of 12 trees beside Pearse Park and the removal of the grassy greenway which is used by many local people for walking and fishing.

"The delegation were satisfied that the Council Management listened to their views about the proposals for the Greenway. It was a constructive meeting and the residents were informed that this section will not be included in the Tender which is to be advertised over the coming week,'' said Councillor Sean O'Brien.

''They were also assured that they will be called to a further meeting to appraise them of the plans for this area before any work commences. The delegation handed in a petition with up to 2,000 signatures and a letter from the residents group outlining their issues with the proposed plan for the shared cycling and walking facility" outlined Cllr O' Brien who attended the meeting with the delegation.
