Several major projects critical for the future development and transformation of Tullamore are pending final approval

SEVERAL major projects critical for the future development and transformation of Tullamore are pending final approval or require additional funding to proceed.

The O'Connor Square/Church Street link is one of those in need of further funding under the RDF (rural development fund).

At the April meeting of Tullamore Municipal District, John Connelly, Senior Executive Engineer with Offaly County Council, told members the construction of the link has an estimated cost of €1.094,571 and is currently in design. The project will utilise an existing, currently hidden bridge over the river at the back of Tullamore library in O'Connor Square. It will also involve the development of an urban garden and the establishment of a working hub on Church Street. The hub is currently in design at an anticipated cost of €500,000.

Then there is the eagerly anticipated High Street, to Tanyard Link which looks set to breathe new life into the heart of Tullamore fostering development and connectivity at the rear of the square. This has an estimated cost of €938,411 euro. It is awaiting Gate 5 approval.

Meath Lane, will provide a pedestrian route to the Esker Arts amphitheatre. Some work has been completed on this particular initiative which falls under the arts centre programme. The estimated cost is €248,000.

Meanwhile, the Tullamore Regeneration Framework (€200,000) which will deliver a framework for Tullamore up to 2040 and the Harbour Masterplan (€245,877) are at draft stage and are currently being reviewed. Mr Connelly said these two initiatives will serve as blueprints for projects in years to come, giving Tullamore a framework for future development.

The completion of Acres folly will cost €160,000 and involves enhancing the landscaping of the surrounding area.

Another critical undertaking is the Urban Greenway which is awaiting URDF (urban regeneration and development fund) approval. This will cost €3.3 million to complete.

Meanwhile Mr Connelly said there are 25 vacant properties earmarked for revival. Offaly County Council has approved €2 million to ''activate'' these properties. Engagement is taking place with 20 owners at the moment signalling a new chapter for these old properties in the municipal district.
