With exactly a month to go to Christmas Day, Met Eireann is not ruling out the possibility of snow for Ireland in the run up to Christmas this year.

Met Eireann does warn that forecasting beyond ten days ahead is uncertain due to the 'chaotic nature of the atmosphere' but the national forecaster is currently forecasting that there will 'winter mixed precipitation' in the run up to Christmas.

In the current forecast for Friday December 16 to Thursday, December 22, Met Eireann says the the predominant picture shows due to low pressure to the northeast and weak, high pressure to the southwest a northerly airflow looks most likely for Ireland.  If this does materialise, Met Eireann says that temperatures will be close to average and a likely showery set up would bring slightly above average rainfall to Ulster and below average rainfall to Munster.

Met Eireann says that potential hazards in this period grow slightly with the northerly airflow likely bringing some winter mixed precipitation and frost potential at night. Winter precipitation could fall as rain, freezing rain, sleet or snow depending on the freezing level in the atmosphere.
