A TULLAMORE man appeared before a recent sitting of Tullamore District Court charged with making threatening remarks towards two Gardaí.

Alfie Quinn, Flat 11, 14 Church Street, Tullamore was charged with threatening behaviour and intoxication on March 29, 2023, on Charleville Road Tullamore.

The defending solicitor Donal Farrelly said his client was pleading guilty.

Sergeant Brendan Kearns told the Judge that at 4am on Wednesday, March 29 two members of Tullamore Garda Station went to Charleville Road in response to a phone call.

“There they saw the defendant. He was lying on the footpath and was highly intoxicated. He became very aggressive towards the Guards and made a number of derogatory remarks, including threatening to headbutt them.”

Sergeant Kearns added that Mr Quinn had several previous convictions including a number of public order convictions.

Mr Farrelly told the court that his client was 29 years of age and had struggled with alcohol for a long time.

“He hasn't been drinking since last March. He is planning to do a course in the hospitality trade. He lives with his mother and is her carer. She is very dependent on him.”

The solicitor said his client hadn't come to the attention of the Gardai since last March.

Judge Andrew Cody convicted and sentenced to two months imprisonment. He  suspended the conviction for two years.
