A man has been charged following alleged vigilante behaviour in east Belfast.

The 37-year-old has been charged with common assault and theft.

He is due to appear before Belfast Magistrates’ Court on September 16.

He was released on bail to allow for further inquiries in respect of his arrest on suspicion of causing criminal damage.

As is usual procedure, the charges will be reviewed by the Public Prosecution Service.

It comes after footage emerged on social media which appeared to show a group of vigilantes roaming in the area.

Police have said they are deploying additional targeted patrols in east Belfast to engage, challenge and monitor these groups and provide reassurance to the community.
