The writer Pádraig Ó Baoighill from Ranafast was described as a man who is an inspirational writer, who supported the Irish language and a man whose positive and steadfast work ethic is indisputable, at an event today, organised in his honour by Independent Councillor Micheál Cholm Mac Giolla Easbuic in Dungloe.
People traveled from across the country to be present for the ceremony which was organised by officers of the Glenties Municipal District Area earlier today.
Actor, writer and director Niall MacEamharcaigh spoke of growing up in an area where Pádraig was born. He eloquently described life in the Gaeltacht as he grew up alongside the writer that has penned over twenty-five well received books.
Independent Councillor Micheál Cholm Mac Giolla Easbuig recounted being brought to protests by the Ranafast native and described the proud association he shares with the well reputed writer.
Ó Baoighill had been to the fore in his work with Gael Linn for many long decades and was steadfast on his view towards the preservation of the the Irish language from the begining to the end of his tenure.
The CEO of Gael Linn, Réamonn Ó Ciaráin said that he began working with Gael Linn in 1993 - the year that Mr Ó Baoighill retired. That didn't stop Ó Ciarán's unwavering appetite for work, Ó Ciarán said, describing how the writer was generous with his knowledge, support and work.
Pádraig Ó Baoighill has written over twenty-five books, those gathered heard and continues to write. His books are of the utmost historical importance. He also worked as a journalist for the Hogan Stand, the Irish Press, Comhar, Lá and An tUltach to name but a few.
Addressing those gathered at the end, Ó Baoighill said that the Gaeltacht regions have a significant part to play in relation to the Irish language on the island of Ireland. The importance of these areas, he said, should never be under estimated.
He was presented with a painting of the view from his native home in Ranafast by the Cathaoirleach of the Glenties Municipal District, Michael McClafferty and Independent Councilllor Mac Giolla Easbuig. The painting is work of the talented local artist Morag McCafferty.
