Donegal Senator: Fuel prices placing 'enormous pressure' on fishing and agriculture

Donegal Senator Manus Boyle says the implications of the current surge in fuel prices are "catastrophic" and that talks are ongoing to introduce subsidies.

Since the outbreak of war in the Middle East three weeks ago, supplies have not run short but the cost of petrol, diesel and kerosene - used for home heating - has increased dramatically. 

The Government look set to announce a three-pronged approach to help people with the cost of living that will impact the price at the pumps, vulnerable people, and hauliers, the Tánaiste Simon Harris has confirmed.

"Talks are ongoing this weekend within Government regarding fuel subsidies, as the continued unrest in the Middle East has driven fuel prices to unprecedented levels," Senator Boyle of Fine Gael said.

"Both our fishing and agriculture sectors are now facing a catastrophic situation, with fuel costs having doubled in just a matter of weeks. This is placing enormous pressure on our fishing fleet, farmers, and the livelihoods that depend on them.
I have been in discussions with [Agriculture] Minister Martin Heydon, strongly outlining the urgent need for targeted supports and fuel subsidies for the Irish fishing and agricultural sectors.

"I remain hopeful that, over the coming days, a satisfactory outcome can be reached to ensure these vital industries can remain operational during this challenging time."
