Call for clampdown on sale of fireworks for Halloween

Senator Fiona O'Loughlin issues warning
Local Kildare Senator Fiona O’Loughlin expressed her concern in the Seanad for the welfare of the elderly, people with autism and animals in the run up to Halloween night due to the purchase of illegal fireworks across the border.
‘‘Now is the time when people travel over the border to buy fireworks which are clearly illegal in the republic.
"The noise pollution caused by the use of fireworks results in serious issues for older people, for people who live with autism and for animals amongst many others. These issues range from disturbance as best to grievous injury at worst.’’
The Kildare South Senator cited a constituent who was left with medical bills of €4,500 following the injury of their dog due to illegal fireworks.
The constituent's dog had a stroke due to the emotional distress of the fireworks, resulting in serious financial and emotional disturbance to its owner.
O’Loughlin concluded by appealing to her fellow members of the Seanad ‘‘Now is the time to plead with people to please not buy fireworks and bangers. I ask that individuals consider the potential stress they could be causing others when they choose to defy the laws of this country in their purchase and consequent use of unstable and dangerous pyrotechnics. This matter deserves attention and needs to be policed appropriately.’’
