Calls have been made for an agreement to be reached between the Council and Coillte regarding the maintenance of a walkway in North Leitrim.

As part of grant funding, Killenummery Men’s Shed had to sign a five-year agreement committing to maintain the Dromore Coillte Walkway.

At a meeting of Manorhamilton Municipal District, Cllr Mary Bohan described the request as “unreasonable,” noting that the men in the group are older and would have to carry out the work by hand.

Coillte has also stated that no machinery is allowed to perform the work. “They’re expecting people in the men’s shed to sign up to go in with shovels and wheelbarrows to maintain that walkway.

"An agreement should be worked out between the Council and Coillte in regards to maintenance,” she said, adding that small machinery should be permitted.

Cllr Bohan also proposed a motion concerning dangerous trees on the R280 at the Carrick-on-Shannon side near Drumkeeran. She noted that last year one of the trees fell; fortunately, no one was on the road at the time, but it did break the crash barrier at the far side of the road.

Senior engineer Paul McMahon confirmed that the issue can be investigated and that the crash barrier is being replaced.
