THE IMPACT in Limerick of the announcement by Dell Technologies that it's to cut more than 6,000 jobs worldwide remains unclear but there are fears of some job losses locally.
The Texas-based company, which has had a presence in Limerick for more than 30 years, is to cut 6,650 jobs, or about 5% of its global workforce, amid falling demand for its personal computers.
Currently, the company employs more than 5,000 people in Ireland at facilities in Limerick, Dublin and Cork which likely means around 250 jobs are are risk. Almost 2,000 of its Irish workers are based in Raheen.
In a memo circulated to staff this Monday, Dell's co-Chief Operating Officer Jeff Clarke said the company is experiencing market conditions that "continue to erode with an uncertain future."
Mr Clarke added that a number of previously-announced cost-cutting measures are no longer enough and that further actions are required.
"Unfortunately, with changes like this, some members of our team will be leaving the company,“ he stated.
