The South Tipperary Dolphin Swimming Club were accorded a mayoral reception in Clonmel as a tribute for their work over the past 40 years teaching children and adults with disabilities and additional needs to swim and to compete in the sport at national and International level.
The club was formed in 1982 when committee members of the South Tipperary Spina Bifida Association decided to organise swimming sessions for Spina Bifida children in south Tipperary.
SUCCESSFUL
The sessions proved so successful that it was opened up to children with other disabilities.
Over the coming months numbers increased to such an extent it was decided to form an independent club.
The function was attended by around 40 people both past and present members of the Dolphin Swimming Club.
MILESTONE
The Mayor of Clonmel Councillor Pat English congratulated the club on reaching such a milestone.
He said the time and effort everyone has put into ensuring this area has one of the most successful clubs in Ireland has to be commended.
“ Your club provides a safe environment in which a child can interact with friends, experience new challenges and learn new social skills,” he said.
Great friendships have begun through the Dolphin Swimming Club and lasted over the past 40 years. We have shared lots of great times with lots of reasons to celebrate.
