An 18-year-old restricted driver was detected driving at 101 miles per hour, Derry Magistrate's Court heard today.

Matthew Loughead of Woodland Gardens in Lisburn admitted the offence which occurred on February 17 this year.

The court heard that the defendant, who was an R driver and restricted to driving at 45mph, was detected driving at 101mph on the Drumahoe to Claudy road.

Due to the high speed it was not possible to supply a fixed penalty.

Defence counsel Fergal McCormack said it was 'a very high speed for a restricted driver.'

He said that Loughead was a new driver and apart from the speed there was nothing else about the driving.

The barrister said that it was 'entirely unacceptable' but said a disqualification could affect Loughead's employment.

District Judge Barney McElholm said that for a 60-year-old driver with 40 years experience driving at 100mph would be disqualified.

He said this was 'a ridiculous speed' for a restricted driver and disqualified Loughead for eight weeks and fined him £400.
