Stephen McGlinchey (30) admits to head-kicking his father and damaging his electronic monitoring tag

Derry Magistrate's Court heard today how a father was assaulted by his son.

Stephen McGlinchey (30) of Lisnablagh Road in Coleraine admitted assaulting his father on October 30 last year.

He also admitted criminal damage to a electronic tag on the same date.

The court heard that police were called to the address of the complainant who said he had been assaulted by his son.

Police observed injuries to the man who told them an argument had ensued and then McGlinchey had assaulted him and kicked him to the head.

When the defendant was arrested it was found that an electronic tag he was wearing had been damaged when the defendant tried to cut it off.

Defence counsel Sean Doherty said his client 'deeply regrets' his actions.

He said he had spent time in custody.

Deputy District Judge John Rea said that the 'circumstances are disturbing' and added that the custody threshold had been crossed.

McGlinchey was sentenced to six months in custody suspended for 2 years and ordered to pay £300 in compensation.
