Coleraine's Kia McCartney has become the North West's newest International cricketer as the 19-year old was named in Ireland's starting XI for today's World Cup qualifier against Thailand Women in Lahore.

Kia was presented with her cap by good friend, and Dragons team-mate Alana Dalzell.

Although she has played in two under-19 World Cups, Kia only joined the senior squad in 2023.

"It's going to be amazing to make my full International debut and although it wasn't something I hadn't put much thought into, I'm determined to do everything I can to make the most of my opportunity. I know that the unavailability of both Freya and Amy has helped give me my chance and I really want to make the most of it.

"Obviously it's disappointing that my family can't be out here to see me with my first cap but it's still going to be such a great experience."

The Dragons' spinner has clear family ties to her cricket- she plays alongside her sister Kenya with the Bannsiders Women's team and her dad, Stephen, has been a massive influence in her fledgling career.

"Kenya and I play both cricket and hockey together and dad has really taken me along on my sporting journey. He's very honest and when he knew that I wanted to develop on in cricket, he gave me the tools and pushed me to get there.

"I'm really excited for today's game and obviously as a squad we're hoping to get a win on the board today today."
