The annual ALPS Dawn Walks return this Saturday to offer solidarity and support for those affected by suicide

Thousands of people across County Derry are preparing to gather in the early hours of Saturday, May 9, for the annual ALPS (All Lives Are Precious) Dawn Walks. This powerful community-led initiative serves as a major regional event dedicated to suicide prevention and the promotion of mental health awareness.

Organised through a collaborative effort between local GAA clubs and grassroots community groups, the walks will see participants gather across various locations in the darkness of night to walk together into the light of the rising sun.

The event is deeply symbolic, designed to represent hope and the transition from despair to support.

The synchronised walks offer a poignant moment of reflection and solidarity for families, friends, and individuals across the county who have been affected by suicide.

Beyond the emotional impact, the event serves a practical purpose by raising vital funds for ALPS support services. These contributions allow the organisation to continue its life-saving work, providing essential resources and mental health training throughout the region.

Participating GAA clubs and community hubs across County Derry will serve as the starting points for this year’s walks. Organisers encourage all members of the public to join the movement, noting that the collective presence of the community sends a strong message that no one has to face mental health challenges alone.

The walks are scheduled to take place at 4.30 am in Magherafelt, Dungiven, Greenlough, Drumsurn, Faughanvale, Lavey, Sluaghneil, Lissan, Ballinasceeen, Kilrea, Castledawson, Glen Maghera, Ballymaguigan, Na magha Doire, Limavady, Newbridge, Loup, Claudy, Ballerin, Desernartin, Bellaghy, Ballinderry, Swatragh and Moneymore.

ALPS (All Lives Are Precious) continues to be a leading voice in community-based suicide prevention, and the Dawn Walks remain their hallmark event for bringing people together in a shared mission of compassion and resilience.

Organisers encourage all members of the public to join, noting that high-visibility clothing is mandatory for safety.
