Goals from Sadou Diallo and Mullen seal big City win in Dublin

Bohemians 1

Derry City 2

Danny Mullen was the super sub for Derry City again as he came off the bench to score a stoppage time winner for Derry City at Bohemians.

The striker, who had come off the bench to score goals against St. Patrick's Athletic and Shamrock Rovers already this season, decided the game in the final minute of added time to make it three league wins in a row for Ruaidhri Higgins and his players.

The goal keeps the Candystripes in touch with league leaders Shelbourne, who won at Waterford, but also takes them 10 points clear of champions Shamrock Rovers, who lost at St. Patrick’s Athletic.

Derry were the most adventurous of the two teams throughout and they could have been well ahead at half time, despite falling behind.

Michael Duffy scored the winner against Bohemians last month at the Brandywell and he almost punished them again just seven minutes in when he got on the end of Cameron Dummigan’s high cross and headed against the post from a difficult angle.

But it was Bohs who took the lead when Sadou Diallo was caught in a lapse of concentration on his own penalty area, resulting in a foul on Dayle Rooney and a penalty for the hosts. Jordan Flores took the kick and saw his effort saved by Brian Maher, but he was reprieved by team mate Grant, who swept in the rebound to make it 1-0.

That lead lasted less than two minutes as Derry City responded brilliantly. It took an unbelievable save from Chirazka to deny Pat Hoban a goal from close range, but from the resulting corner, there was nothing the Bohs goalkeeper could do as Diallo side-footed home from Will Patching’s cross.

The goal aside, the home side were second best in the first half and it took another fine save from Chorazka to deny Derry, this time diving to his right to push Patching’s 20-year free-kick behind for a corner.

For all their domination, Derry City almost gifted Bohs a second goal as half time approached, when Ben Doherty’s pass across his own goal only set up Rooney, but he was denied by Maher, who read the danger well and was off his line quickly to save.

The chances continued to come Derry City’s way early in the second half when Dummigan found Hoban all alone in the Bohs’ penalty area, and although the angle was against him, Hoban still went for goal, with Chorazka having to save his team yet again.

The visitors did win it late on, and deservedly so, when Cameron McJannet, on his final appearance for the club, headed the ball down for substitute Mullen in the penalty area, and his control and finish were perfect as he drilled the ball left-footed into the net to seal the three points.
