A pair of fundraisers from Derry will embark on a massive challenge later this year which will see them walk over 60 miles of the Great Wall of China. Kevin McCafferty and Una Dunne will take up the China Hiking Challenge in October with the goal of raising £8,000 for Macmillan Cancer Support, having already gathered £3,000 towards their goal. Speaking to the Derry News, Kevin said that while they were well aware of the ‘massive challenge’ that lay ahead of them with the 100km walk, those dealing with cancer were dealing with a much bigger challenge on a daily basis. “Una and myself are aware this is going to be a massive challenge, but by doing this, we’re going to raise £8,000 for Macmillan, and every day our family and friends have to wake up to a much bigger challenge, which is cancer,” he said. “Macmillan are not a government supported organisation, they rely on donations and fundraising, so we’re delighted to be able to help them.” Kevin continued that both he and Una are well into their training regime, which, unsurprisingly, involves a good deal of walking.” “Yes, we’re doing a lot of hillwalking too, as well as going to the gym and monitoring our food intake,” he said, before adding that both he and Una were doing the walk in memory of relatives. “I’ll be doing this in memory of my aunt and godmother Mary McCafferty and my cousin Rosemary Carlin, who both sadly passed away in the last year due to cancer.” Una meanwhile, is taking up the challenge in memory of her grandparents Steve and Isobel Dunne and close family friend Gerard O’Kane. In addition to the hiking challenge, a number of other fundraisers will be announced in the coming weeks and months, ranging from entertainment, football tournaments, raffles and pigeon auctions. Donations can be made through both Una and Kevin’s Just Giving pages – Una’s can be found at www.justgiving.com/fundraising/Unadunne while Kevin’s can be found at www.justgiving.com/fundraising/Kevin-Mccafferty2. You can also simply search for both Kevin and Una’s name at Just Giving. “Donations can also be made directly to Una and myself, and we really appreciate all the help we received,” Kevin added.
