Derry man accused of threatening to stab father in the eye with screwdriver remanded

Dean Elliot (27) of Dungiven Road in Derry appeared charged with a series of offences including possessing an offensive weapon, threats to kill, attempted grievious bodily harm with intent and criminal damage
A man accused of threatening to stab his father in the eye with a screwdriver has been remanded in custody at Derry Magistrates' Court.
Dean Elliot (27) of Dungiven Road in Derry appeared charged with a series of offences including possessing an offensive weapon, threats to kill, attempted grievious bodily harm with intent and criminal damage.
All of the offences were said to have involved his father and occurred on January 1.
The court heard that police received a dropped 999 call and attended Dungiven Road.
There the defendant's father said his son had held a screwdriver to his throat and threatened to kill him.
He alleged that he had then placed the screwdriver to his eye and threatened to stab him there.
The court heard that a screwdriver was found nearby and Elliot was arrested.
Defence solicitor Seamus Quigley said that the defendant had been drinking all day and added that if Elliot avoided alcohol he avoided offending.
He said this was a serious incident that could have been a lot more serious.
The solicitor asked for bail with no alcohol condition.
District Judge Barney McElholm said that he would have his doubts Elliot would adhere to the no alcohol condition as he hadn't in the past.
He said there were clearly 'unresolved issues' between the father and son and their addresses were far too close together.
The judge said that there was clearly a risk of further offending and refused bail.
Elliot was remanded in custody to appear again on January 30.
