Che O'Connor (25) of Eden Square in Derry faced charges of assault on the ambulance worker and two police officers on May 4

A man has been remanded in custody at Derry Magistrates' Court charged with spitting on an ambulance worker.

Che O'Connor (25) of Eden Square in Derry faced charges of assault on the ambulance worker and two police officers on May 4.

He was also charged with resisting police and the theft of a tag on the same date.

A police officer connected the accused to the charges and opposed bail.

He told the court that at 11am on May 4 police were called to Northland Terrace where ambulance workers were dealing with O'Connor.

Initially O'Connor was unconscious but when roused he became 'aggressive and then physically aggressive'.

The defendant was said to have spat at an ambulance worker and due to his behaviour medics refused to treat him.

Police took him to Altnagelvin Hospital where he was described as 'volatile and irate' spitting at police and limb restraints and a spit guard had to be applied.

At one stage O'Connor had to be carried to a police van and he was alleged to have kicked an officer.

At interview the defendant said he had taken 'multiple drugs' and had no memory of the incident and wished to apologise.

Bail was opposed due to the risk of reoffending with the defendant having 128 previous convictions.

The police officer told the court he had been counting the number of bail breaches the defendant had but stopped when he reached 30.

Defence counsel Stephen Chapman said the defendant knew how the system worked and bail could be considered if a suitable address could be found.

Bail was refused and O'Connor was remanded in custody to appear again on May 29.
