A man has appeared at Derry Magistrates' Court charged with breaching his bail on a number of domestic offences.

James Kelly (37) of Rinmore Drive in Derry was arrested on March 9 for breaching his bail conditions by contacting his former partner and sending allegedly numerous abusive messages.

Police arrested him at his address and found a phone that had been turned off. They proceeded to ring the number that had sent the messages and confirmed that they were the same device.

When asked for the pin, Kelly claimed not to know it and claimed that it was the injured party that had been sending messages to him.

Kelly was on bail for a number of domestic offences, including common assault, non-fatal strangulation and stealing cigarettes and alcohol.

Defence solicitor Seamus Quigley, when applying for bail, said that the case was not a straightforward one but said that police now had the phone Kelly had been using to send the offending messages.

Bail was refused and he was remanded in custody and will appear again on March 27.
