Derry man remanded for breach of bail conditions

Darren McGrath (18) of Duncreggan Road in Derry was on police bail for charges of assault against his partner
A man has appeared at Derry Magistrates Court following a breach of bail conditions.
Darren McGrath (18) of Duncreggan Road in Derry was on police bail for charges of assault against his partner on November 13 during which he was said to have thrown a lighter and cigarette at her.
Police said that they gave him a chance following his initial arrest but received a report on November 30 that McGrath was drunk in the A&E department of Altnagelvin Hospital, breaching his bail conditions.
Police objected to bail as they say that McGrath has 'massive addiction problems' and, with 18 previous convictions, is at clear risk of reoffending.
Defence Barrister Stephen McNichol said that McGrath's partner, the injured party, was not co-operating with the prosecution in relation to the assault charges.
He added that McGrath claimed that he was simply giving his partner the lighter after she had asked for it.
McGrath was remanded in custody and will appear again in two weeks time.
