Derry man sentenced over ‘Nazi scum’ slur to PSNI officer

Judge warns court will not tolerate disorderly behaviour after Derry man is convicted over Rossville Street incident.
A man who was stopped by police under the Justice and Security Act became disorderly and called a police officer 'Nazi scum' Derry Magistrate’s Court heard today.
Kevin Brady (44) of Ballymagowan Avenue in Derry appeared after being convicted of disorderly behaviour on August 30 2022.
The court was told Brady was stopped by police in Rossville Street at around 7.50pm.
The court heard that during the stop Brady became aggressive and called one officer 'Nazi scum'.
He was warned about his behaviour but responded by raising his middle finger towards officers and continued to do this.
A prosecutor said that there were children in the area at the time.
Defence solicitor Paddy MacDermott said that this was a stop and search and the defendant told police 'what he thought of them'.
He said no one in the vicinity complained and from the CCTV footage the police officers seemed to be amused.
District Judge Suzanne Rice asked Brady to rise for sentencing but the defendant refused.
The judge said that Brady had shown a 'high degree of disrespect' towards the PSNI by words and gestures.
She said that the courts would not tolerate such behaviour and said Brady had failed to show any remorse or co-operate for a pre-sentence report.
She imposed a sentence of 3 months suspended for 12 months and ordered him to pay £100 in compensation.
