Derry man who threw bleach over his pregnant partner remanded

Jamie Curran (30) of Ebrington Terrace in Derry appeared charged with among other charges non fatal strangulation on August 14
A man has been remanded in custody at Derry Magistrate's Court today charged with a litany of domestic offences including throwing bleach over his pregnant partner.
Jamie Curran (30) of Ebrington Terrace in Derry appeared charged with among other charges non fatal strangulation on August 14, possessing an offensive weapon namely a bottle of bleach, assault, making threats to kill and behaving in a manner that could be deemed domestic abuse.
A police officer connected the accused to the charges and opposed bail.
The court heard that police were called after members of the public heard an argument.
Police attended and Curran and his partner answered the door and the defendant was said to have been abusive 'shouting and swearing' at police.
When he was arrested a friend of the alleged victim told police to follow up with the woman.
Police spoke to her and she outlined a series of assaults including the non fatal strangulation when he was said to have put a charger lead around her neck and an incident where he threw the bleach over her and himself before trying to set it alight.
The woman said that Curran had 'changed' following his release from prison.
She said he had accused her of sleeping with someone else.
The defendant's brother also said he had made threats towards him as well.
Bail was opposed due to the risk of reoffending as Curran has 36 previous convictions and interference with witnesses.
Defence solicitor Paddy MacDermott said that the record was mostly for driving and there was no domestic offences there.
He said his client was denying all the charges and could be released on bail with 'stringent conditions'.
District Judge Ted Magill said these were 'serious allegations' against a pregnant woman.
He refused bail and Curran was remanded in custody to appear again on September 11.
