Derry's council expected to back proposal to name new Brandywell stand after Derry City legend Mark Farren

Derry City and Strabane District Council is to debate a proposal to name a new stand at the redeveloped Brandywell Stadium after Mark Farren.
The Derry City legend passed away last week at the age of only 33.
In the wake of his death, an online petition was launched calling for the new stand at the Brandywell to be named in Mark’s honour.
The issue is to be discussed at the next full meeting of the council, which owns the Brandywell.
At the meeting, the city’s Mayor Elisha McCallion will put forward a motion proposing that they should name the new stand after Mark, who is Derry’s all-time record goalscorer.
Colr McCallion said everyone had been shattered by his death at such a young age.
“What better way to ensure that Mark’s sporting ethos and commitment is passed on to the next generation of young footballers than to have a permanent memorial in the form of the Mark Farren Stand in the Brandywell Stadium.”
Her motion is expected to receive the support of all other parties on the council.
