A Dungiven woman, whose pioneering research has resulted in significant improvements for people living with head and neck cancer, has said she is ‘overwhelmed’ to be named as the Royal College of Nursing 2015 Nurse of the Year.

Cherith Semple (pictured), who was born and raised in the Co Derry town, but now lives in Newtownards, is a Macmillan cancer nurse specialist at the South Eastern Health and Social Care Trust.

She beat off competition from three other finalists to receive the award for leading a series of initiatives which have resulted in significant improvements for cancer patients at a local, national and international level, at the RCN awards ceremony recently.
