Final piece in the puzzle will see roaming charges abolished this summer - but it may be too little, too late for the North

An agreement has been reached to limit the price EU mobile operators can charge for phone calls, texts and data.

This is the final piece in the puzzle which will allow for EU “Roam Like at Home” to commence this summer.

“Roam Like at Home” will give Irish and EU consumers the ability to use their mobile devices, within other EU countries, at domestic rates, subject to 1Fair Use Policy.

However, mobile phone users in Derry and across the North may continue to face phone charges due to Brexit.

"If Britain succeeds in dragging the North out of the EU against the democratic wishes of the people we will continue to be faced with these unfair charges," said Sinn Fein MEP Martina Anderson in July last year.

"Roaming charges are one of the negative realities of partition faced by thousands of people who live along the border and who travel across the border every day to work and study," she said.

“Ireland has always fully supported the ending of roaming charges for consumers periodically travelling in the EU. We have been a strong and vocal advocate for the payment of domestic prices, regardless of where in the EU mobile devices are being used," said Irish Minister for Communications Denis Naughten TD.
