Guaranteed Interview Scheme in competition for applicants with a disability

The Department for Infrastructure is seeking to recruit three non-executive  members to the Board of Londonderry Port and Harbour Commissioners.

The official launch of the open competition process took place last week, with applications closing on Thursday, March 13, 2025 at 12 noon.

The current pay for a non-executive member of the Board is £9,811 per year, which is currently under review. It is based on the anticipated attendance of two full business days per month.

The successful applicants will be expected to attend Board meetings and other ad hoc meetings as required. This may also involve a commitment both inside and outside normal working hours, including representing Londonderry Port and Harbour Commission at occasional evening engagements.

The Department for Infrastructure said it would like to see the membership of its Public Body Boards such as Londonderry Port and Harbour Commissioners “reflect more closely the makeup of the society in which we live”.

It added: “Women, younger people, people with a disability and ethnic minority communities are currently underrepresented on our Boards and so applications from these groups would be particularly welcome.

“Applications are also invited from people who have gained suitable experience from within the community or voluntary sectors.”

The Department highlighted it was operating the Guaranteed Interview Scheme in this particular competition for applicants with a disability.

Londonderry Port and Harbour Commissioners was established in 1854. As an independent statutory authority, the Port has a duty to “develop, maintain and operate to the highest standards of efficiency, financial prudence, environmental awareness, safety and security”.

The Port is independent of Government and is self-financing.

Originally located in the heart of Derry City, the Commissioners relocated to the current deep water location at Lisahally in 1993. The Port is primarily a bulk port and a major importer of oil, coal, animal feed, fertiliser and plywood.

According to the Port, the organisation has experienced “significant growth” since 2003 - doubling turnover and profit. It has also “attracted approximately £100 million of inward investment” and supports projects including a fertiliser plant, an oil tank farm and a biomass power station.

It is estimated that by facilitating the import of essential agri-products, the Port supports approximately 20,000 farms in the North West and various local business sectors including the fuel/oil and construction industries. The organisation also supports an estimated 1000 direct and indirect jobs.

Foyle Port also offers a diverse range of services including external marine and engineering services each marketed under the "Foyle" Brand.
